# Volatility advanced In this practice, you will learn how to use the basic functionalities of Volatility to analyze memory dumps. Volatility is a powerful memory analysis tool that allows the identification of processes, network connections, Windows registry information, open files, and more. During this activity, you will work with a real [memory dump](https://drive.usercontent.google.com/download?id=1qfU9Ixqx1YqNgZFWOz548lbvK4A80md-&export=download&authuser=1) and will be required to use various plugins and command modifiers to solve the 16 questions posed. The required steps are described below: 1. Determine the operating system profile corresponding to the memory dump. 2. Use the appropriate plugins to extract the requested information. 3. Apply command modifiers to filter and organize the results. By the end of the practice, you should be able to identify active processes, registry keys, network connections, and other relevant artifacts. --- ## Requirements 1. Make sure you have Volatility 2.x or Volatility 3 installed. 2. Download the memory dump assigned for this practice. 3. Document the commands used to answer each of the questions. Submit a detailed report containing the answers to the 16 questions, accompanied by screenshots of the commands executed and the results obtained. --- ## Questions ### **Operating System Profile** grep '^[0-9]' | wc -l ``` The result is `3414` ### **Compressed File** **One of the open files is compressed using 7z. What default name does Volatility assign to it when exporting it as a `.dat` file?** Previouly we saw this table containing a .7z file: |TreeDepth|Offset|Name PDB scanning finished| |---|---------|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |...|...|...| |0 |0x7dcaa620|\\Users\\Admin\\Desktop\\ficheroSecreto.7z | |...|...|...| So we can try to recover it by dumping the ram content to a directory called `dump`: ```bash mkdir dump vol -f dump.raw -o "dump" windows.dumpfile ``` Then, search for the extracted file and rename it with the original name. If we try to extract its content we can see that it is password protected. ```bash ls | grep fichero cp file.0xfa801aeaa620.0xfa801b02d460.DataSectionObject.ficheroSecreto.7z.dat ../ficheroSecreto.7z cd .. 7z x ficheroSecreto.7z ``` ![alt text](./images/image-2.png) ### **File Path** **What is the on-disk path of the compressed 7z file, as shown by the `filescan` plugin?** ```bash vol -f dump.raw -r csv windows.filescan | grep ficheroSecreto.7z ``` |TreeDepth|Offset|Name PDB scanning finished| |---------|------|------------------------------------| |0 |0x7dcaa620|\\Users\\Admin\\Desktop\\ficheroSecreto.7z| |0 |0x7e5df4d0|\\Users\\Admin\\Desktop\\ficheroSecreto.7z.tmp| ### **File Creation Date** **When was the compressed file created? Expected format: `DD/MM/YYYY`** ```bash vol -f dump.raw -r csv windows.mftscan.MFTScan | grep ficheroSecreto.7z ``` |TreeDepth|Offset |Record Type|Record Number|Link Count|MFT Type|Permissions|Attribute Type|Created |Modified |Updated |Accessed |Filename | |---------|----------|-----------|-------------|----------|--------|-----------|--------------|------------------------------|------------------------------|------------------------------|------------------------------|---------------------| |1 |0x24202120|FILE |22880 |2 |File |Archive |FILE_NAME |2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|ficheroSecreto.7z | |1 |0x6a9fce40|FILE |22880 |2 |File |Archive |FILE_NAME |2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|2020-06-12 16:17:12.000000 UTC|ficheroSecreto.7z.tmp| `It was created on 12 June 2020 at 16:17:12 (UTC).` ### **Visited Website** **Find the address of a science-related website visited using Firefox. Expected format: `https://xxxxxxx.xx`** ```bash strings -a dump.raw | grep -E "https://[a-zA-Z0-9\-]{7}\.[a-z]{2}" ``` ![alt text](./images/image-3.png) The page is `https://sci-hub.tw` ### **Date and Time of Visit** When was the website mentioned in the previous question visited? Expected format: `DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS (UTC)` Go to the directory dumped in exercise 10 and search for the places.sqlite file where firefox stores some cache information. ```bash cd dump ls -lah | grep places.sqlite ``` ![alt text](./images/image-8.png) Open one big file and open moz_places and moz_historyvisits, trying to obtain the ID of the request (in this case 8) and the timestamp ```bash sqlite3 file.0xfa801ac41f20.0xfa801acb9b40.DataSectionObject.places.sqlite.dat .tables select * from moz_places; select * from moz_historyvisits; ``` ![alt text](./images/image-11.png) Transform the date to a human redeable time format: ```bash select datetime(1591971503557000/1000000,'unixepoch'); ``` ![alt text](./images/image-12.png) The date is `2020-06-12 at 14:18:23` ### **Notepad** **The Notepad application contained a password that we want to recover. Can you identify it? Hint: the user reuses part of their passwords.** Previously we saw: |TreeDepth|PID |PPID|ImageFileName |Offset(V) |Threads|Handles|SessionId|Wow64|CreateTime |ExitTime|File output| |---------|----|----|--------------|--------------|-------|-------|---------|-----|------------------------------|--------|-----------| |...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...| |0 |3060|1928|notepad.exe |0xfa801aa10270|2 |58 |1 |False|2020-06-12 16:16:34.000000 UTC|N/A |Disabled | |...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...|...| As the PID is 3060, we can dump this process specifically: ```bash vol -f dump.raw windows.memmap --pid 3060 --dump ``` And then, strings the file, searching for some useful information as "columna" as the user has the operating system in spanish: ```bash strings -e l pid.3060.dmp | less ``` ![alt text](./images/image-7.png) The password could be `admnistradorFicheroDescifrado` ### **Encrypted File** **Analyze the contents of the compressed and encrypted 7z file. What does it contain?** Extract the content of the zip using the password `admnistradorFicheroDescifrado` ```bash 7z x ficheroSecreto.7z ``` ![alt text](./images/image-9.png) Open the file to show the flag ```bash cat ficheroSecreto.txt ``` ![alt text](./images/image-10.png)
